Welcome to Native Knowledge, a consulting practice dedicated to supporting clients' landscaping needs while maximizing their savings through flexible services and simple, transparent pricing.
My name is Heather Lyle and I am, first and foremost, a plant specialist with a passion for gardening and landscapes. My nails attest to my intimate connection with the earth and plants. While some use plants to serve their design vision, I prefer to serve my plants' needs and help them become the artists, the creators, the landscape designers.
I love native plants and diverse native habitats because they are perfectly suited to this beautiful region we call home. They are also varied enough to provide just the right color and structure to complement any style. If you want to move away from massive golf course lawns and tired, overused, unsustainable plantings, then we should talk. If you want your landscape to be a mini ecosystem that attracts songbirds, bees and wildlife (maybe not just deer!) and gives you a multi-sensory experience every time you walk through it, then we really need to talk.
Because I want to keep my hands in the dirt, I've developed a business that keeps me out of the office. I charge an hourly fee for my time, plain and simple. That gives me flexibility to serve your needs, whatever they may be. Do you just need someone to pick out and place some plants for you? Devise a long-range plan? Look over an existing plan? Fluff up a bed? Do a major overhaul? Install new landscaping? Do you want to be very involved in your landscaping project or only somewhat involved? Either way, I've got you covered. I can tailor my services to include creating a budget, coordinating planning, draw from my list of tradespeople, requesting bids, scheduling work, supplying your plantings, monitoring installation and alerting you to issues as I see them. We will not have a firm bid but we will have a budget that I will take seriously, so we won't be haggling over changes/details and we can easily work together in stages. You are in charge. You don't have to pay thousands for fancy plans and presentations, unless you want to. You can ask me for more or less support at any time. Our interests will be aligned because I will not be rushing to get out of your project with the greatest profit possible.
I have experience doing projects both large and small. My specialty is choosing the right plants for our harsh environment and your garden.
My friends jokingly call me the "pot lady" because I can make your front entry sing with living flower arrangements in your existing pots. What a great gift to yourself or a loved one!
More than anything, I love prairie grasses, range land and wildlife. I am on a personal crusade to keep invasive species at bay and let the Texas Hill Country revert to the diverse habitat it once was. I can help you restore your Hill Country Property, whether its large or small.
Yes, I speak a little Latin and I consult with landscape designers and architects who are looking for species identification and unique plant selections.
From refreshing your flower beds to a full landscape overhaul, I've got you covered. Hire me to do some or all of your project. My crew has many skill sets including retaining walls, brick, concrete, stone patios, driveways, decks, fencing, steel/metal work, welding, full irrigation instalation or updating,/repair, of existing systems, drainage solutions...Hiring my company can save you tons because we do all these things "in house."
Give me a tour of your property and we can come up with a concept
If you want to go a step further, I can take a few hours to come up with a basic plan of action, budget plant list and basic schematic.
We can also consult with a landscape architect or other professionals if you require more elaborate renderings, I have excellent contacts. You reimburse me for their services and pay me for the coordinating and design.
You'll need to make sure that your irrigation system works. We will convert, fix or add to what you already have in place, or, install a new system if you do not have one. If you want to do some stonework, metalwork or concrete work, now is the time for that. I charge you for labor, materials and the time I spend supervising and coordinating.
Let's get your soil healthy. This is so important to your garden's succsess, plants need this to thrive and it saves water in the long term. I'll order the right blend of soil and organic mycorrhizal ammendments for the job and get it delivered.
This is where I shine! My knowledge of plants, plant combinations, availability and ability to source unusual native or adapted plants, how they work with your shade, sun, deer problems, and soil type will give your garden life and interest. I take great care to use things that will survive Austin's low winter temperatures and events.
I'll place the plants and either you can plant them, or my crew can. You pay for their labor, and the time that I spend sourcing plants, placing and coordinating.
I'll help you make sure that you're giving your plants the right care, water, cutting back, organic fertilizer and instruct your gardener or maintinence crew on just what to do. Need any further support? I'm here for you.
Want a huge bang for your buck? Instantly dress up your front entry with beautifully planted pots. I will select a lovely seasonal arrangement. THIS MAKES A GREAT GIFT!
Take your Hill Country property back two centuries to when it wasn't all cedar! Texas offers a beautiful palette of native grasses, flowers and trees that are waiting to enhance your views and attract wildlife (not just deer, but a variety of species that keep your land healthy).
I'll travel to your property and evaluate it. Riparian areas, meadows and rocky hillsides all host different habitats and support specific plants. We can decide how much we want to restore.
I'll design a plan of action and put you in touch with those who can help carry it out. I can be onsite as necessary to help keep things moving smoothly. You pay what they charge plus the time that I spend ordering materials and coordinating.
